It seemed like everyone turned out for our New Wortley Community Walk on 5th June! Led by a marching band – thanks lads, we marched to the Wortleys, st Marys Close, up to the social club, along the avenues, around the back of the prison down to the play park and performance circle, back up by wellington stores, Clyde walk and a final tune outside the Clydes and Phil May court! Then it was back to the Community Centre for a BBQ and fun long into the night. Thanks to Leeds Rhino Tom Briscoe who stopped by as a special guest!
With over 100 people on the walk we are sure this was one of the most successful events on the Walk Leeds – Walking festival!
We had pushchairs, Mums, Dads, Grandmas and Grandads, Schoolkids, young and old and of course the New Wortley walking group! – In fact a right cross section of the New Wortley Community, thanks to Castleton Family Centre staff and Castleton school staff.
Thanks to Andy Picken and all the community centre volunteers and staff who helped make the day possible.
As part of our social day and community celebration we had a public launch of the New Wortley Our Place plans to local residents on the 5th June.
New Wortley Our Place has been a community led partnership which has encouraged services and agencies to focus on the priorities New Wortley residents want addressing. The plans went down very well and the community association promises to hold everyone and every agency to account that they deliver on the promises made. With some new investment coming into the area, the future for New Wortley is starting to look a little brighter!
Plans are available from the office at the community centre. If you want to get involved to improve New Wortley please get in touch with us at the community centre.
Thanks to COGS and Tony Herrmann, and Gary Murphy for running the event.
